Parent / Observer Access
Stay Connected to Your Student's Learning
Parents and guardians can create a free Canvas Observer account and connect it to their student's Canvas account.
- View course content and classroom materials
- See assignments and due dates
- Read course announcements
- View course calendars
- Monitor grades when enabled by the teacher
Setting Up a Parent Observer Account
Parents need a pairing code from their student's Canvas account before creating an Observer account.

Get a Pairing Code
Ask your student to generate a pairing code from their Canvas account settings.

Create Your Account
Open the HISD Canvas login page and select the option to create a parent account.

Connect Your Student
Enter the pairing code to connect your Observer account with your student's Canvas account.
Where Does My Student Find the Pairing Code?
Your student can sign in to Canvas and generate a pairing code from their account settings. The pairing code allows a parent or guardian to connect an Observer account to that student's Canvas account.
Account → Settings → Pair with Observer
Parent Observer Accounts are View-Only
Parent and guardian Observer accounts are designed to help families monitor student learning. Observer accounts cannot submit assignments or participate in course discussions on behalf of a student.
